Zambian Air Force ensign

The Zambian air force ensign from "Die Luftwaffenflaggen Großbritanniens und der Commonwealth-Staaten" by Karl Fachinger is given as being a plain air force blue flag, with the roundel in the center, and no national flag in the canton. The roundel has an orange border, the center disk is divided in three sections of (clockwise) red, black, green; in the center is the Zambian eagle in white.

Fin Flash

image by Željko Heimer, 26 Nov 2003

The Zambian Air Force (ZAF) uses the multi-colour device of the flag with a bottom green bar as its fin flash.

Vertical rectangular shape composed of three vertical bars, red-black-orange, and a green horizontal bar beneath them. Cochrane and Elliott [cos98] shows the fin flag with the green stripe at the top! This should be checked and if possible corrected in future updates of the Album. Also, according to the same source, the roundel and the fin flash are based on the national flag and all are adopted in 1964 and have not been changed since.

Željko reports from Album 2000: "Vertical rectangular shape composed of three vertical bars, red-black-orange, and a green horizontal bar beneath them. Cochrane and Elliott [cos98] shows the
fin flag with the green stripe at the top! This should be checked and if possible corrected in future updates of the Album..........."

No....the Album is not mistaken, it appears that [cos98] is!  http://www.airliners.net/open.file/458772/L/
shows that the bar is on the bottom. AAMOF, Album is mistaken and I am proud to be the reason to show the correction.

On October 1999, I made a series of reports about fin flashes. Those were mainly based on [whe86] but also some other aviation books. As I reported Zambia (with the red bar at the bottom), I received an urgent
off-list message from Armand. It seem that in the Album's draft the bar is up (as appear in [cos98]) and it is seem logical consider the national flag. However, I did remember a photo of a ZAF's SIAI-Marchetti
SF-260MZ in one of my aviation books which I scanned and sent it to Armand.  The Album has been since been corrected but [cos98] is still incorrect.
